Scuba
What scuba has contributed to our conquest of the ocean is already enormous.
To professional students of the sea it is nearly as important an invention as the printing press, and to amateurs it has been no less liberating.
With the simpler but equally important devices of face-plate and fins, it has made diving one of the great participant sports of our generation, and one of the great sources of education.
Amateur divers have made underwater photography, once the specialty of a few highly trained specialists, a mass hobby.
They have discovered new species of marine life. They have probed the wrecked skeletons of ships that otherwise might have been lost to history.
But our weapons of exploration and discovery are still just partially successful. The knowledge they give us is intimate but not deep.
We still know almost nothing about most of the 140 million square miles of ocean that surround us, of the shape and history of the continents they conceal, of their immeasurable and untapped resources, of their relationship to life itself.
Perhaps some day we will. The sea gives up its secrets slowly.
The history of diving is largely the story of equipment. The introduction of face-mask, fins and snorkel in the '30's planted the divers' flag firmly in underwater territory.
Exposure suits added new dimensions of area and season. And finally the demand-regulator lung took thousands of divers to depths that until then had been the exclusive province of men with hard hats and air lines.
But scuba has not made the mask-fin-snorkel combination obsolete.
If there's one opinion that all diving experts share, it's that nobody should simply strap on scuba and plunge, with no previous underwater experience.
Scuba should not provide anyone with his first look at the world under the surface. Before you bet your life on your ability to handle a lung, you should become a competent skin-diver—with mask, fins and snorkel as your only gear.
This is no mere dull preliminary chore. Actually, many of the top divers, hunters and photographers prefer to use the basic trio and rarely or never use lungs.
Besides, you can do things with just a mask that simply aren't possible with scuba.

Scuba Diving in the Island of Maui
A few miles west of Los Angeles, are the group of tiny islands known as Hawaii. Here, tourists can enjoy the white sands, the volcanoes, the surf and life under the water. This is because Maui is considered to be one of the best dive spots in the world.
What does it mean to be one of the best dive spots? This means the place has a diverse collection of plant and animal life. The person can also see some species of fish that aren't found anywhere else in the world.
This all begins by booking a flight to this tiny little island and then making arrangements with the resorts to go diving. Those who are licensed can hire a boat while those who aren't yet certified can enroll in a basic course.
Most resorts are certified by SSI, NADI or PADI so the person can be assured of the quality of education provided by the dive master. The individual can even rent the gear, which isn't that expensive so there isn't as much gear to carry from the mainland to the island.
Since most of the hotels are nestled by the beach, after getting the equipment, you can hit the water.
Of course, there are other places worth seeing such as the Molokini Marine Reserve that is an island volcano located a few miles from Maui. A boat can be charted to head off to this distant island or others to be able to catch a dolphin, an eel or even a sea turtle.
Those who want to try something different can even engage in night diving. Holding a flare in the hand, you may get to see some animals sleeping peacefully which is impossible to do during the daytime.
The rates for diving vary at each resort. The customer can check online or have the travel agent make the inquiry when planning the details for the trip. When everything is set, the only thing to do is pick the equipment from the dive shop and then go down into the ocean to take a glimpse of the beauty from the deep.
Diving enthusiasts should check out the various dive spots near the island of Maui to experience the beauty of the surroundings instead of relying of photographs or reviews found in a magazine.
